Natural MicroSystems third-quarter profit tops views
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Oct 12 (Reuters) - Communications software maker Natural MicroSystems Corp. (NasdaqNM:NMSS - news) on Thursday reported it swung to a higher-than-expected operating profit in its third quarter, from a loss in the year-earlier period, as revenue doubled.

The Framingham, Mass.-based company, which a week ago shelved an expected share sale after a steep fall in its stock price and instead sold convertible notes, said that, excluding unusual items, it earned $5.8 million, or 15 cents per share, in the quarter, against a loss of $2.6 million, or 11 cents per share, in the year-earlier period.

Analysts on average had expected the company to earn 8 cents per share, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

Including acquisition costs and other items, Natural MicroSystems reported a net loss of $15.2 million, or 42 cents per share, compared with a loss of $2.8 million, or 12 cents per share, a year earlier.

Shares in Natural MicroSystems have dropped more than 30 percent in the past month. They closed at $52-3/8 on Wednesday.
