GE Denies Rumor of Profit Warning

NEW YORK (Reuters) - General Electric Co. on Wednesday denied rumors that it planned to issue a profit warning and said it was very comfortable with Wall Street expectations that the conglomerate will report higher fourth-quarter and full-year earnings.

``Responding to an outrageous rumor this morning of a potential profit warning, nothing could be further from the truth,'' GE Vice President of Investor Relations Mark Vachon said in a statement.

``Our operations continue to run at a record pace. We remain very comfortable with analysts' consensus estimates for both fourth quarter and total year 2000, which will deliver earnings per share of $1.27, up 19 percent over 1999,'' he said.

Analysts' consensus earnings estimate for the fourth quarter is 36 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial. GE earned 31 cents a share in the 1999 fourth quarter.

Shares of Fairfield, Conn.-based GE (NYSE:GE - news), the world's biggest company in terms of stock market capitalization, were down $1-1/2 to $49-1/4 in early New York Stock Exchange trading. The shares traded as low as $48-3/8 in pre-open activity on the Instinet brokerage system before the company denied rumors circulating in Europe that a profit warning was in the offing.

Vachon's statement was released by GE shortly before the opening of trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Earlier in the morning, GE spokesman Gary Sheffer told Reuters the company, whose businesses include broadcasting, power generation and financial services, had no plans to issue a profit warning or any other statement today. But that changed when the company learned of the rumors, he said.

Recently, such high-profile companies as AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news), Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) and Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNMhttp://www.stock-channel.net/Board/smilies/biggrin.gifELL - news) have issued profit warnings.
