More Uncertainty Damps Holiday Cheer
By Haitham Haddadin and Nick Olivari
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures rose on Sunday evening after Republican presidential candidate George
Bush http://www.stock-channel.net/Board/smilies/throwupen.gif said he was ``preparing to serve'' as America's next president after Florida certified him as the winner of its crucial 25 electoral votes.
Wall Street was already eying more holiday cheer this week before the announcement by Bush as investors prepared to snap up more beaten down technology stocks.
Still, investors were not optimistic that the volatility that has plagued equity markets in recent weeks was over, given that Democrats have vowed to pursue litigation over the vote count in Florida.
``This will just mean more uncertainty and it will contribute to the general volatility of the market for another week, so it's not a good thing,'' said Rich Barnett, a money manager who oversees $5 billion in assets for City National Investments in Beverly Hills, Calif.
On Sunday evening, Bush called upon his Democrat opponent, Vice-President Al Gore, to end his legal challenges to the outcome in Florida and the Nov. 7 election. Gore earlier moved to contest the results and prevent Bush from becoming the next president of the United States.
Florida's vote is decisive in determining who will serve as the 43rd U.S. president as both men need the state's electoral votes to reach the 270 required to win the
White house.
Standard & Poor's 500 Index futures rose 8.6 points to 1,355 after Bush made his announcement, while those for the Nasdaq 100 Index rose 61 to 2,890. Electronic trading system Instinet reported no U.S. equities were trading immediately after the Bush announcement.
The election uncertainty may mean that any pre-holiday rally could be short-lived as the same ghosts haunting the market are still around the corner -- worsening profits for corporate America as the economy slows.
``We're looking at a Wall Street that has hopes for a Santa Claus rally, but not a lot of conviction about what kind of rally it may be,'' said Alan Ackerman, market
strategist at brokerage Fahnestock & Co.
In the longer term, tech stocks could succumb to more selling, warns market tracker First Call/Thomson Financial.
Since early October, analyst forecasts of profit growth by technology companies dropped sharply to 16 percent from 29 percent for the fourth quarter, and to 16
percent from 28 percent for the first quarter of 2001.
``It's beginning to look a lot like a cyclical downturn in technology,'' First Call research director Chuck Hill said.
An end to the U.S. presidential election stalemate could send the Nasdaq Composite Index up more than 10 percent, Ackerman said, echoing sentiment among
other market watchers who say that will peel away one thing the market hates most -- uncertainty.
Others say the beaten-down market wants a breather for now, and even in the event that the battle for the presidency lingers, it may extend Friday's remarkable
recovery.
``The market has swallowed all of that. It is really heavily oversold,'' said Henry Herrmann, chief investment officer at Waddell Reed Asset Management Co.,
which manages $26 billion.
Friday's advance, which saw the Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) rise 149.04 points, or 5.41 percent, to 2,904.38, came in an abbreviated post-Thanksgiving
session. Investors snapped up high-tech shares that had carved out new lows for the year on Wednesday.
A handful of earnings reports may boost gains in the beaten-down tech sector. Among high-tech firms anticipated to beat estimates is Brocade Communications
(NasdaqNM:BRCD - news), the maker of switches and software for data storage networks.

RETAIL SECTOR IN SPOTLIGHT
All eyes will be focused on the retail sector this week -- the long post-Thanksgiving Day weekend gives a taste of what holiday shopping will look like. But opinion
is divided on the impact of a slower U.S. economy on American consumer spending.
``One thing that is going to be important is the Monday and Tuesday view of how good the weekend retail sales were. That can help some or disappoint further,''
Herrmann said. ``My presumption is we will get off to a pretty good start.''
Others say shoppers may leave the bulk of buying until they can get deeper discounts shortly before Christmas.
This week also brings November retail sales data for stores open at least a year, with most due on Thursday. Auto makers will report November car sales on
Friday. These will be widely watched because October was a bad month.
Also facing the market are the revised third-quarter real Gross Domestic Product data on Wednesday. Economists are looking for 2.6 percent GDP growth, down
from an already reported 2.7 percent, more evidence that the economy is slowing. ..... eine Schlüsselzahl diese Woche !!! http://www.stock-channel.net/Board/smilies/frown.gif

Moin Ralph und Gert,
Things that are obvious are obviously wrong. I don't think anything got settled today politically, however. If there is a "Bush rally", I don't expect it to even last the day tomorrow. AlBore is going to have to be physically removed from the White House grabbing the furniture by his fingernails. Mark my words, this will ultimately be settled in a special session of the FL legislature, from which there is no appeal. I think they'll involve themselves in the next few days. THAT'S when the Bush rally will begin in earnest. In the meantime, plenty of time to go back & test last week's lows. Interestingly, Erniek posted an Ewave update (from his German source) predicting a low out there just below 2600 before we spike up to 3400 or so. I've heard it said they have to get going in the legislature by Dec. 5th (in order to allow the unsigned legislation to become law by Dec. 12 without Jeb Bush's signature) & that fits in well with my timing for a 9-month cycle bottom in the market that would be "on schedule" Dec. 4th. Until then, I'm a growling bear!
We shall see.
PS: Ugly looking chart no matter how you slice it

Hey Ralphi,

Ralph, good call today.
