Housing Starts Jump 2.2 Percent in Nov.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Led by a surge in new residential construction in the U.S. West, building starts on new homes and apartments rose in November as mortgage rates across the country slid, the government said on Wednesday.
Housing starts jumped 2.2 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.562 million after posting a 0.6 percent decline in October, the Commerce Department said. Starts in November were at their highest level since June, when they reached 1.571 million.
The figure was much higher than estimates from Wall Street economists who, on average, had figured housing starts totaled 1.536 million last month.
Permits for new housing projects across the United States rose 2.6 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual 1.586 million after posting an 1.8 percent increase in October. The permit figure was above analysts' estimates for 1.529 million.
