Technology, Financials Ascendant
Back in 1968, producers of basic materials were the largest single group in the S&P 500 Index, with a 15% weighting. Now materials producers account for just 2% of the $11 trillion index, while technology dominates with a 27% share. The tech weighting has fallen this year, with the sector down almost 30%, while the financial and health-care sectors have seen their weightings in the index increase.
