A Splitting Headache

We are paying the price for the split-happy era we just went through. The price is a simple one: These $15 and $18 and $9 and $7 stocks are still big market caps because of the splits. So our judgment about these stocks is impaired. We think that a stock that is at 4 doesn't have a lot of risk, 'cause, well, it's at 4 and can only fall four points. I have fallen those four points so many times in my career that I can't bear to see you do so. Those four points hurt more than you will ever believe if you haven't taken that long ride down to oblivion.
May I make a suggestion before you speculate in one of these stocks? Take a look at what the stock would be selling for if it had never split. Recalculate the price. Then Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq - news - boards) doesn't seem like such a bargain. Then you would be less likely to scoop up a little Engage (ENGA:Nasdaq - news - boards). Then you might not want to speculate on CMGI (CMGI:Nasdaq - news - boards).
Let's do the work on the CMGI. Here is a stock that split 2 for 1 in January 2000, 2 for 1 in May of '99, 2 for 1 in January of '99 and 2 for 1 in May of '98. I bet you wouldn't buy this sucker at $100 bucks. ..... No James, I certainly wouldn't ! http://www.stock-channel.net/Board/smilies/biggrin.gif
