Market Preview For Tuesday

I2 Technologies [ITWO] after Monday's close said it expects to beat analyst estimates for its fourth quarter, due to strong sales of e-business offerings. I2 shares rose as much as 17% in after-hours trading.

Amazon.com [AMZN] late Monday said sales for the fourth quarter of last year would top $960 million, which was at the low end of expectations. Shares of Amazon surged 15% in after-hours trading, then gave back almost all of its gains. Yahoo [YHOO] and eBay [EBAY] shares also received a boost in Monday's extended-hours session.

After Monday's close, MiniMed [MNMD] warned its fourth-quarter revenues and earnings would fall short of estimates due to slower sales in December.

Chordiant Software [CHRD] late Monday said it would buy PrimeResponse [PRME] for $44 million in stock.

Apple [AAPL] CEO Steve Jobs delivers a speech on Tuesday to kick off the MacWorld Conference and Expo.

H&R Block [HRB] meets with analysts in New York on Tuesday.

IPO lockup restrictions expire on 52% of I-Many [IMNY], 76% of OmniVision Technologies [OVTI], and 81% of Pain Therapeutics [PTIE] shares on Tuesday.

InsWeb Corp (INSW) 1 1/8 unch: Company reaffirms its previously raised fourth quarter revenue guidance; sees approximately $5 mln for the quarter.

Reliant Energy (REI) 37 1/4 +5/8: Company made an emergency filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission today, urging the FERC not to force the financial uncertainty of the near-bankrupt California electric utilities on suppliers across the entire western region.


Intel (INTC) 31 15/16 -1/8: Salomon Smith Barney analyst, Jonathan Joseph, out with a research note after the close... believes Intel will hit in the range of its revised Q4 guidance for flat sequential sales growth, plus or minus a couple of points; however Joseph is concerned about Q1 outlook based on PC and Taiwanese motherboard markets... As a result, he is lowering Q1 revenue expectations from flat to down 10-15% due to weak demand and concerns PC component companies, like Intel, are taking from Q1 to make Q4; fears that excess capacity will likely begin to lean heavily on margins... current Q1 EPS estimate is $0.35 (First Call consensus is $0.35) but Joseph believes it could come in closer to $0.30 and says 2001 EPS of $1.42 may fall to $1.30 or less (First Call consensus is $1.53).

Stoneridge (SRI) 5 7/8 -5/8: Designer and manufacturer of engineered electrical and electronic components warns for Q4; sees $0.04-0.08; current First Call EPS estimate is $0.16. Says the revised estimate includes a favorable impact from an adjustment to the tax provision primarily to reflect the benefits of tax restructuring initiatives. Cites the continuing decline in automotive and commercial vehicle sales, production inefficiencies and unfavorable foreign exchange rates.

eBay (EBAY) 31 11/16 +1 1/8: Prudential reiterates STRONG BUY rating and price target of $125 following company's announcement that it will pay $120 mln in cash to acquire a majority stake in South Korea's Internet Auction Co.; says the acquisition should be neutral to operating income, but slightly dilutive to EPS in FY2001, due to foregone interest income; firm adjusts 2001 estimates to reflect the acquisition and now sees revenues of $651 mln (from $631 mln) and lowers EPS, excluding noncash charges, to $0.39 (from $0.40).

Crown Cork (CCK) 9 1/4 +11/16: John W. Conway has assumed the role of CEO, succeeding William J. Avery.

Aztar (AZR) 11 3/8 +1/8: Company warns for Q4; sees EPS of about $0.10; current EPS estimate is $0.14. Operating results for the company's property in Atlantic City were flat compared to the prior year's quarter and the company's Las Vegas operating results were up substantially; riverboat casinos in the Midwest were adversely impacted by severe winter weather in December.

SeeBeyond (SBYN) 7 1/2 -13/32: Company issues upside preannouncement for Q4; sees loss of $0.06-0.10; current EPS estimate is ($0.10); revenues are expected in the range of approximately $40.0 to $42.0 mln.

MiniMed (MNMD) 33 -3 1/2: -- Update -- Company also announces that its pending supplemental pre-market approval application for the consumer version of its continuous glucose monitoring system will be subject to FDA panel review. The date for the panel meeting has not yet been set.

MiniMed (MNMD) 33 -3 1/2: Company warns for Q4; sees EPS of about $0.17; below First Call consensus estimate of $0.19. Revenues are to be within the range of $88 to $98 mln. Company cites failure to increase December domestic insulin pump placements as much as expected.


Perot Systems (PER) 9 13/16 -1/16: Company to acquire substantially all the assets of Covation, an application service provider (ASP) serving the healthcare industry.

Prime Response (PRME) 1 11/16 +5/16 : Company to be acquired by Chordiant Software (CHRD 2 3/4 +1/16) for 0.6 CHRD shares per PRME share.

Quokka Sports (QKKA) 5/8 +1/32: Company warns for Q4; sees revenue in the range of $8.5 to $9.0 mln and net loss between $19.5 and $21.5 mln, current analyst estimate calls for a loss of $0.26 per share.

Airgas (ARG) 7 3/4 +1/8: Company warns for Q3; expects to report EPS in the range of $0.10 to $0.12, also below previous estimates by $0.03 to $0.05 per share; cites severe weather in December across many parts of the country.

CheckFree (CKFR) 39 1/4 -2 1/4: Friedman Billings initiates coverage with a MKT PERFORM. While firm is enthusiastic about the CKFR story, including their position in the electronic bill payment and presentment marketplace, believes most of the positives are already priced into the stock
