IBM [IBM] after Wednesday's close reported fourth-quarter earnings of $1.48 a share, beating Wall Street forecasts by $0.02. Revenue also came in higher than expected. The company said it is confident in its outlook for
2001 and that strength in Europe and Asia offset U.S. weakness. IBM shares rose 11% in after-hours trading.
Shares of Apple Computer [AAPL] rose 3% in after-hours trading despite the company reporting a first-quarter loss of $0.73 a share, which was $0.08 greater than analysts expected. Apple, though, said it anticipates a return
to profitability in the second quarter.
Xilinx [XLNX] late Wednesday reported third-quarter earnings of $0.31 a share, missing the First Call consensus estimate by a penny. Revenue was also lighter than expected. Shares of Xilinx fell 4% in after-hours trading.
After Wednesday's close, KLA-Tencor [KLAC] reported a second-quarter profit of $0.57 a share, topping analysts' expectations by $0.02. The company also said its bookings reflected strength in all product areas. KLA shares
gained 13% in Wednesday's after-hours session.
Sanmina [SAMN] shares edged up in after-hours trading after the company reported first-quarter earnings above Wall Street's expectations.
EMC Corp. [EMC] after Wednesday's close said CEO Mike Ruettgers will become executive chairman, while COO Joe Tucci will assume the role of chief executive officer.
Shares of Arthur Gallagher [AJG] are expected to split 2-for-1 based on Thursday's closing price.
