SANTA CLARA, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Net media giant Yahoo rose more than 8 percent in afternoon trading on speculation that the company is talks to merge with Viacom.

Yahoo (YHOO: news, msgs), which has been under increasing pressure to form a pact similar to the AOL Time Warner deal to sustain earnings and revenue growth, rose $2.38 to $29.75.

At Yahoo, spokeswoman Shannon Stubo said, "We do not comment on market rumors or speculation."

And Viacom spokesman Carl Folta said his company had no comment. Viacom is the world's third largest media entity behind Disney (DIS: news, msgs) and the newly formed AOL Time Warner (AOL: news, msgs). (Through its CBS subsidiary, Viacom is a significant shareholder in the publisher of this report.)

Viacom's stock rose $1 to $57.87.

The speculation comes one week after Yahoo significantly reduced its revenue and earnings estimates for the year in the face of a slowing online advertising environment.

Several analysts said they were aware of the rumors, but could not confirm talks between the two companies.

McDonald Investment analyst Sasha Kostadinov said a merger between Yahoo and Viacom or any other media entity would be contrary to Yahoo's long term open-access strategy, in which many players distribute their content through the company's popular portal. "But that's not to say that they wouldn't change," he said.

Yahoo is regarded as a likely merger participant because analysts have speculated that Yahoo may need to keep pace with its chief rival, America Online, after the consummation last week of the AOL Time Warner merger
