Commerce One (CMRC) is expected to top Wall Street estimates when it announces fourth-quarter financial results after the close of trading today.

The maker of b-to-b e-commerce software is expected to report a net loss of 7 cents a share, minus special charges, on revenue of about $176 million, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Last quarter, Commerce One posted sequential revenue growth of 60 percent to 80 percent, depending on whether you factor in its acquisition of consulting firm AppNet.

If it meets Wall Street estimates for the fourth quarter, sequential revenue growth will drop to 56 percent, given inclusion of AppNet revenue for the third quarter.

Ariba (ARBA), by comparison, grew revenue by 26 percent when it reported fiscal first quarter financial results last week. Of course, Ariba also posted a first-time profit of 5 cents a share.

Analysts were concerned about how the difficulties facing dotcom b-to-b marketplaces were affecting Ariba sales. Commerce One will get the same scrutiny, since it also sells software to dotcom customers.

Observers also will pay close attention to Commerce One's network services revenue, which is the money the company brings in through subscription and transaction fees from the marketplaces it powers. The figure was $10.1 million in the third quarter, up 44 percent from the second quarter
