Market Preview For Next Week
=========================================================
Cautious optimism lingers over Wall Street following this week's lukewarm guidance from Intel [INTC], Sun Microsystems [SUNW], and Microsoft [MSFT]. All eyes will be on JDS Uniphase [JDSU], which is expected to report
financial results after Thursday's close. Analysts expect the optical-component giant to earn $0.19 a share in its second quarter, up from $0.09 during the same period last year. Nortel's [NT] optimism for 2001 might be good news for JDS Uniphase.
Compaq [CPQ] will also report results next week. The computer maker beat estimates last quarter and analysts are cautiously optimistic this time around despite disappointing results from competitor Gateway [GTW]. Wall
Street expects Lam Research [LRCX] to top forecasts following strong results from fellow chip-equipment makers KLA-Tencor [KLAC] and Novellus Systems [NVLS]. The Street expects Veritas [VRTS] to match estimates in its
fourth quarter, with a profit of $0.17 a share.
Other companies expected to report financial results next week include Texaco [TX], Chevron [CHV], American Express [AXP], Coca-Cola [KO], Qualcomm [QCOM], Exodus Communications [EXDS], Broadvision [BVSN], Tellabs
[TLAB], Compuware [CPWR], Akamai [AKAM], Cirrus Logic [CRUS], VeriSign [VRSN] and Informix [IFMX].
Amgen [AMGN] shares rose 21% in Friday's after-hours session following news that the company won its patent infringement suit against Transkaryotic Therapies [TKTX]. The suit protects its anemia drug, which brings in $4
billion in worldwide revenue.
ViroLogic [VLGC] late Friday said a preliminary study of its Phenosense HIV test failed to achieve "statistical significance." Its shares fell 5% in after-hours trading.
Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan testifies to the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday, which could give investors clues as to the timing of future rate cuts.
Enron [ENE] holds an analyst meeting on Thursday, while Johnson & Johnson [JNJ] holds an analyst meeting on Tuesday.
<u>Word On The Street</u>
"The economy is in process of continuing to slow and I think that took some of the starch and steam out of enthusiasm for owning equities," says Tom Sparico, managing director of equities at Bengal Partners.
