Report: Bank of America Chief to Retire
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp.(NYSE:BAC - news) Chairman Hugh McColl, who led North Carolina's NationsBank as it built the nation's first coast-to-coast bank, plans to retire in April, the Charlotte Observer reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources.

McColl was not available for comment on the report, and a bank spokesman declined comment to the newspaper.

Since taking the helm of predecessor NCNB Corp., with $12 billion in assets in 1983, McColl over the years engineered a series of mergers and takeovers that ultimately created the $642 billion Bank of America.

McColl had been set to retire a year after Charlotte-based NationsBank acquired San Francisco's BankAmerica in 1998. But months after the merger agreement, he agreed to stay on until June 2002 after heir-apparent David Coulter, who had headed BankAmerica, resigned in the wake of losses from a hedge fund investment.

McColl, 65, who also serves as chief executive officer, plans to announce his retirement plans to the board of directors on Wednesday and tap Bank of America President and Chief Operating Officer Ken Lewis to succeed him as CEO, the newspaper reported.
