* Investors were non-committal on balance, as the major indices entered
a holding pattern in front of Alan's Greenspan's testimony before the
Senate Budget Committee tomorrow. Traders hope the Fed chairman will
provide some insight as to FOMC's next move on interest rates. With Fed
Fund Futures pegging the odds of a 50bps rate cut next week at 70-75%,
anything short of that will be met with some disappointment. Many
market watchers would be concerned that the Fed will fall behind in the
fight to keep the economy from entering a recession. The Dow Jones
Industrial Average shed a couple points to end at 10,647. The NASDAQ
Composite managed to squeeze out a 0.7% gain to close at 2,859.
Tonight's earnings lineup includes Amgen (AMGN), Corning (GLW), JDS
Uniphase (JDSU), and Veritas (VRTS).
* Institutional Money Flows:
Internet Infrastructure HOLDRS (IIH) posted a 7.8% gain, boosted by
Portal Software (PRSF), which surged on rumors that a deal with America
Online (AOL) is set to be announced. PRSF skyrocketed $3 7/32 to $11
3/4, VITR jumped $1 5/16 to $8 23/32, AKAM surged $3 1/4 to $35 3/8, and
BVSN advanced $1 5/8 to $16 15/16.
Internet HOLDRS (HHH) advanced, boosted in part by the lingering effects
from Ebay's surprisingly strong 4Q report last week. YHOO surged $3
59/64 to $42 7/8, EBAY gained $2 to $54 3/8, AMZN hopped $2 59/64 to $21
7/8, and EXDS gained $2 3/16 to $28 3/16.
Data storage stocks took a hit after Goldman Sachs and Salomon Smith
Barney both downgraded Network Appliance (NTAP), citing valuation and
concerns that EMC (EMC) may be taking market share away. Additionally,
Qlogic (QLGC) failed to meet lofty revenue expectations when it reported
FY01 3Q results late yesterday, adding to the selling pressure. NTAP
plunged $12 3/16 to $61 3/8, QLGC slumped $15 3/16 to $82 1/2, BRCD fell
$4 7/32 to $105 7/16, MCDT dipped $7 3/4 to $61 1/2, and EMLX gave up $6
9/16 to $103 1/16.
* Bonds fell for the fourth straight session, though the pace of the
deterioration slowed today. Market News offered some support, after they
said that the probabilities of a 50bps are more likely than indicated in
yesterday's story, which sent prices plunging. Though Greenspan's
testimony takes center stage tomorrow, investors will be monitoring the
initial jobless claims and the employment cost index as well. The
30-year Treasury Bond slipped 5/32 to 108 9/32, raising the yield to
5.66%.
