Medimmune quarterly profits rise 65 percent
NEW YORK, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Biotechnology company MedImmune Inc. (NasdaqNM:MEDI - news) on Wednesday posted a 65 rise in fourth-quarter operating earnings, edging analysts' estimates by a penny, on dramatic sales growth of its flagship product Synagis for a common childhood infection.
The Gaithersburg, Md.-based company said it had net earnings of $79.4 million, or 36 cents per diluted share, compared to $34.2 million, or 16 cent per diluted share in the same year-ago period, including items. Excluding items, earnings grew 65 percent to $82 million, or 37 cents per diluted share in the 2000 period.
Analysts expected the company to report a profit of 35 cents, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.
Revenues grew 37 percent to $238.2 million in the quarter, driven by a 40 percent increase in Synagis global sales to $212 million.
