PMC-Sierra (PMCS:Nasdaq - news), a designer of chip networking solutions, said that earnings in the fourth quarter were 34 cents a share, in line with expectations.

That's up six cents from the third quarter and more than triple the fourth quarter of 1999, when earnings were 11 cents a share. Revenue came in at $232 million, nearly on target with the consensus estimate of $229 million, according to First Call/Thomson Financial. The revenue figure is up from $198 million in the third quarter and from $92 million in the fourth quarter of 1999.

For the year, revenue was $695 million, up from $296 million in 1999.

In a statement, PMC-Sierra said that bookings declined in the fourth quarter, indicating either large inventories or that demand dropped off. The company didn't provide an outlook for the first quarter or 2001 in its statement.

PMC-Sierra hits 4Q targets but bookings slip

By Larry Barrett ZDII

Communications chipmaker PMC-Sierra met analysts’ estimates in its fourth quarter Thursday, returning a profit of $62.5 million, or 34 cents a share, on sales of $231.7 million.

First Call Corp. consensus expected the company to earn 34 cents a share on sales of $228.6 million.

PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq: PMCS) shares closed off $7.25 to $95.88 ahead of the earnings report.

The $231.7 million in sales marks a 152 percent jump from the year-ago quarter when it pocketed $19.3 million, or 11 cents a share, on sales of $87.6 million.

For the fiscal year, PMC-Sierra earned $179.4 million, or 99 cents a share, excluding charges, on sales of $694.7 million, up 135 percent from fiscal 1999 when it made $56.6 million, or 35 cents a share, on sales of $295.8 million.

Despite the strong results, company executives said bookings declined in the fourth quarter of 2000, resulting in a book-to-bill ratio below 1.0. http://www.abt-edv.com/Board/smilies/eek2.gif
