Vitesse Semiconductor warns
By Emily Church, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 7:47 AM ET Mar 5, 2001

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Citing the downturn hitting its communications customers, chipmaker Vitesse Semiconductor on Monday warned it'll miss its second quarter sales and profit targets.

Vitesse (VTSS: news, msgs, alerts) further cited an unexpected weakness in its storage applications business for the decline. Shares were down over $2 from their Friday close at $35.50 in early Monday trading in London, according to market makers Madoff Securities. See Indications.

The stock dropped 9.57 percent Friday ahead of the warning.

Cypress too

Meanwhile, Cypress Semiconductor (CY: news, msgs, alerts) on Monday, another chip supplier to the communications industry, warned it'll miss its first quarter sales and profit forecast.

The warning was the second from Cypress, which said it now sees a 15 percent drop in revenue.

Camarillo, Calif.-based Vitesse cut its revenue forecast range by about 16 percent to $150-160 million from $180-190 million. The company lowered its net income to 21 cents to 22 cents per share from 26 cents to 27 cents per share.

In a statement, chief executive Lou Tomasetta said, "due to the continuing loss of visibility among our communications customers and the unexpected decline in our storage applications, we no longer had confidence that our forecasted turns business would materialize.

"We continue to see strong growth in our network processor, switch fabric and OC192 module accounts and believe these areas are softening the blow of the major downturn that has been reported by nearly all the communication IC suppliers," he added.

XLNX, TQNT expected to warn (XLNX, TQNT) By Susan Lerner
On the heels of earnings warnings from chip makers Cypress Semiconductors (CY) , LSI Logic (LSI) and Vitesse (VTSS) Monday morning, some of the same is expected from TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT) and Xilinx (XLNX) when they are scheduled to provide updates on business conditions after the closing bell. Merrill Lynch analyst Chris Danely told clients early Monday he expects TriQuint to lower sequential revenue growth expectations for the first quarter to the negative 5 percent range from previous expectations for a 5 percent increase. As for Xilinx, Danely thinks the company will lower sequential revenue growth expectations for its fourth quarter to close to Danely's negative 11 percent estimate from previous guidance for "flat to slightly up" growth.

Vitesse Joins Warning Parade

By Betsy Riley

3/5/01 7:50 AM ET

There's yet more bad news for communications chipmakers, which have been hit by (surprise, surprise) continued weakness in communications and data-storage business.

This time it's Vitesse Semiconductor (VTSS:Nasdaq - news) that's issuing a warning. The company said it expects second-quarter earnings to come in at 21 cents to 22 cents a share, lower than its previous forecast of 26 cents to 27 cents a share. The consensus estimate of analysts polled by earnings tracker First Call/Thomson Financial is currently 26 cents a share.

Vitesse also said it was revising downward its second-quarter revenue to a range of $150 million to $160 million from its current projection of $180 million to $190 million. The First Call estimate was $177.6 million.

In the past couple of weeks, we've seen Broadcom (BRCM:Nasdaq - news) get battered from negative analyst research notes due to news that its customer 3Com (COMS:Nasdaq - news) was issuing a warning . On Friday, Advanced Micro Circuits (AMCC:Nasdaq - news) got its earnings outlook cut by Goldman Sachs. And at the beginning of last week, PMC-Sierra (PMCS:Nasdaq - news) fell to a 52-week low on a trim from Salomon Smith Barney.

Cypress Semiconductor (CY:NYSE - news) also issued a warning this morning, saying revenue and earnings for the first quarter would be lower than estimated.

Vitesse Semi (VTSS) 24 3/8 -2 5/8: SG Cowen, in an intraday call, lowers estimates for FY01 from $0.90 on $643 mln in revenues to $0.54 on $514 mln, cites broad based weakness and company's downside preannouncement for Q2; thinks aggressive R&D bodes well for 2002 and maintains BUY rating.
