Nokia Q1 margins to beat expectations
Finnish group sales Q1 sales to be lower than anticipated

By Gareth Vaughan, FTMarketWatch 11:53:00 AM GMT Mar 15, 2001

HELSINKI (FTMW) - Nokia [US:NOK] said on Thursday it expects better than anticipated first quarter margins and earnings in line with expectations, but at the same time the world's biggest maker of mobile phones cut its forecasts for global mobile phone sales.

Shares jumped 12.2 percent to €27.60.

The comments from the Finnish company end days of speculation that it would follow rivals such as Ericsson [SE:000010865] [US:ERICY], Motorola [US:MOT], Siemens [DE:723610] and Matsushita [US:MC], and issue a profit warning. See related story.

Nokia said its strong product portfolio and "superior execution in mobile phones" had helped widen its market share to above the 32 percent it achieved in 2000.

Sales growth to be slower than expected

However, Nokia [SE:000053994] did say that it now expects its first quarter sales to grow by 20 percent versus its earlier forecast of 25-30 percent growth. The company also said that it expects first quarter earnings per share to be in line with its earlier forecasts of €0.19.

Analysts had been expecting margins at Nokia Mobile Phones, the group's cellphone unit, to fall to 18 percent in the first quarter from 21.3 percent in the fourth quarter.

"They're demonstrating that they're really head and shoulders and perhaps whole torso above their competitors in this market," said Susan Anthony telecoms equipment analyst at Credit Lyonnais in London.

Separately, the Finnish company cut its forecast for global mobile phone sales this year to 450-500 million units from its earlier forecasts for sales of 500-550 million units.

"The slower than expected sales growth in the first quarter is mainly due to the stronger than anticipated impact of demanding market conditions," Nokia said. "Especially in the United States, economic uncertainty has increased during the last weeks."

"Nokia will continue its strategy of aggressively gaining market share without compromising profitability," the company added.

Inventory down

The group said its own inventory levels, as well as the numbers of Nokia-manufactured cellular phones in its sales channels, were lower than they had been at the end of 2000.

Nokia Mobile Phones accounted for €21.8 billion of the group's total 2000 revenue of €30.4 billion. The company, which makes about one in three mobile phones sold worldwide, also supplies mobile phone infrastructure equipment.

The company said Nokia Networks, its infrastructure unit, had won several deals to deliver third-generation mobile network technology and it was targeting the leading position in that market, which is currently held by Sweden's Ericsson.

Nokia's set to report its first quarter results on April 20.
