GoTo Says to Top Previous Forecasts

PASADENA, Calif. (Reuters) - Web search service GoTo (GOTO) said on Thursday it expects to top previously announced first-quarter revenue and net-loss guidance, citing a strong and growing customer base. The Pasadena, Calif.-based company, which provides search services to Internet companies, did not specify its projected first quarter results.
The last time the company specified its forecasts was on Feb. 13, when it said it expected revenue of $45 million and a net loss, before acquisition-related charges, of $16 million for the quarter ending March 31.
Analysts expect the company to report an operating loss of 33 cents per share in the first quarter compared to a loss of 20 cents in the same year-ago period, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.
GoTo also said that it surpassed 40,000 active, paying advertisers in the month of February, up from 37,000 at the end of last December and 21,000 at the end of December 1999.
``Internet search is the ultimate direct marketing medium,'' GoTo President and Chief Executive Ted Meisel said in a statement. ``As advertisers look for measurable results, particularly in a challenging economy, they continue to adopt GoTo in increasing numbers.
