Chew Away Your Cold

DOYLESTOWN, PA, Oct 16, 2001 (INTERNET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Considering that the average American chews about 300 sticks of gum a year(1), it's not surprising that sooner or later someone would figure out how to make all that chomping good for more than simple oral satisfaction.

Just in time for this year's cold season, The Quigley Corporation is introducing new COLD-EEZE(R) Cinnamon Gum with Zinc Gluconate Glycine (ZIGG(TM)), the only formula clinically proven to reduce the duration and symptoms of the common cold by 42 percent when used at the first sign of a cold. When taken at the first sign of symptoms, consumers will see a three-day reduction to a typical seven day cold, helping them to get back to work or play much faster. Unlike common over-the-counter cold medicines, COLD-EEZE not only treats the symptoms, it combats the cold virus naturally and helps you get better faster.

A"Sticky" Situation

Chewing gum made from tree resin and sap dates back to the ancient Greeks. The modern day variety was invented in the late 1800s, but it wasn't until recently that manufacturers have recognized its potential as a delivery vehicle for various medicines.

In addition to fighting colds with the new COLD-EEZE Cinnamon Gum, consumers now can treat head and body aches with aspirin gum, extinguish heartburn with antacid gum, curb the urge to smoke with nicotine replacement gum, shed excess pounds with diet gum and ward off cavities with dental gum.

"As it becomes more socially acceptable to chew gum in schools, public venues and the workplace, we anticipate even more over-the-counter gum-based products to hit store shelves," said Albert Piechotta, director of advertising and communications for The Quigley Corporation. "The success of our COLD-EEZE bubble gum over the past two years led us to cinnamon gum as a natural extension."

Tasty Treatments

Whoever said that medicine has to taste bad to be good certainly hasn't tasted recent gum-based offerings. Convenience is also a key element to compliance with any recommended treatment. Gum-based medicines offer several advantages over pills:

- Gum is easily transportable. Whether it's a whole pack or a single
stick, the product is wrapped for cleanliness and easily fits
inconspicuously in a pocket, briefcase or purse;
- Gum can be taken anywhere - no cup or water needed;
- Gum is discreet - no one knows you are taking medicine, so it can be
taken when needed, even if you're in a meeting; and
- Gum chewing is an effective way of releasing zinc ions into the
mucosal area where cold viruses reproduce.

E-Z Relief

COLD-EEZE Cinnamon Gum is the newest addition to the COLD-EEZE line of products that also includes Cold Drops, Bubble Gum and Sugar-Free Tablets. All the COLD-EEZE products contain an exclusive patented and trademarked Zinc Gluconate Glycine formula (ZIGG(TM)) to fight the cold virus effectively and naturally. Cold sufferers can find the new cinnamon gum in national drug, discount and grocery stores starting in September - just in time for the cold season. Each package of COLD-EEZE Cinnamon Gum includes 20 Zinc Gluconate chewing gum sticks, which contain 13.3 mg of Ionic Zinc per stick. The suggested retail price is $5.99.

In two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies conducted at the Cleveland Clinic and Dartmouth College and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, patients taking COLD-EEZE recovered completely from their colds more than three days faster, on average, than the patients who received a placebo. In addition, individual symptoms went away faster.

"By offering COLD-EEZE in both gum and drop forms, we are able to respond to consumer preference and demand for convenient cold medicine delivery," Piechotta added.

COLD-EEZE is the No. 1 pharmacist recommended zinc cold treatment. It is recommended four to one over its nearest competitor (Pharmacy Times survey, 1998-2001).

The Quigley Corporation (QGLY) is a leading marketer and developer of diversified natural health and homeopathic products including COLD-EEZE cold drops, a family of zinc lozenges and chewing gum. COLD-EEZE has been proven in two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms. In addition to over-the-counter products, the company formed Quigley Pharma Inc. to introduce an upcoming line of prescription products. The Quigley Corporation's customers include leading national wholesalers and mass merchandisers as well as independent and chain food, drug and discount stores.
