Gold Daily and Silver Weekly Charts - Blythe Gets Spanked

http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspo...-charts_23.html

Gold and silver moved higher today, and are both up against overhead resistance.

Intraday commentary here.

I seem to recall saying that the Yen intervention by the G7 was not so much for the Japanese and their rebuilding as it was for the benefit of the financial global carry trade. Et, la voila.

Yen action sets scene for return of carry trade - FT

8 Hour Gold Update - 2:30 PM CDT

It is apparent that someone was not too happy with a brand new all time high in gold today. It was stuffed back into its box quite unceremoniously I might add.

One can tell from looking at the volume that all of the new longs that bought the breakout of the nearly month long congestion pattern have been handed an immediate paper loss thanks to the barrage of selling.

It will be up to the bulls to hold the line near $1420 or the technicians are going to have a field day trumpeting a false breakout which will engender some further long liquidation, especially because we are entering a rollover period - a favorite time for these bear raids to occur in the past.

If the bulls can hold $1420, they will be okay. If they fold here, the price is going to drop back lower into the former congestion zone and will more than likely test $1410 again.

Either way the price action is not encouraging. The HUI is not helping matters either as it too is puking. Silver also is now looking like the longs are bailing. It needs to hold $36.50 on any further downside move.

Gold Daily and Silver Weekly Charts - Blythe Does the Expected

http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspo...-charts_24.html

On Tuesday I wrote:
"Since option expiry is on Monday the 28th, I would expect Blythe to throw some cards on the table and at least take a run at this rally. If it comes it will be in thin trading and likely into the weekend."
Yesterday in an intraday commentary I said:
"Gold is right up against the big inverse head and shoulders neckline around 1440. I am struggling to see a breakout here, but it is possible. The last big neckline breakout took place around a failed option expiration gambit... I take profits, holding bullion but trading paper, and retire to the kitchen for the evening trade."
So gold and silver ran higher today, and then suffered a savage bear raid in the late trade in New York, before Asia wakens, and while the European are eating their dinners.

Let's see if Blythe can follow through with this tomorrow. I was a little surprised that they made their move today, especially with the news from Portugal, and especially so blatant an intervention. But the financial and political communities in the US are riding high, in the euphoria that comes with self-serving schemes going well, just before their downfall.
"I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself,
And falls on th'other. . . ."

Macbeth Act 1, scene 7. 25–28
It seems to be this way, doesn't it, this pride just before a fall? One has to wonder if it is merely bravado, or if supposedly educated people can be that willfully arrogant and ignorant of the consequences of their actions. And then faced with failure, pride takes the next step, madness is unleashed, and tragedy begins.
"We can never be gods, after all. But we can become something less than human with frightening ease."

N.K. Jemisin
I did come back into the market near the end of the US trading day, buying gold and silver and shorting broad equities in a paired trade, but lightly for now. I want to see what Blythe has left for Act II of this opera buffa.

Dylan Grice Explains Why He Likes Gold, And Why $7,500/Oz Makes A Gold Standard Possible

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 03/25/2011 10:04 -0400

Three months ago, there was some confusion when SocGen's Dylan Grice, one of the brightest big picture strategists out there, released a report profiling the long-term real return on commodities (which was zero), leading some to speculate he was bearish on gold and/or other precious metals. Today, Grice puts the matter to rest with his latest Popular Delusions piece: "Why this commodity specific value investor likes gold." To wit: "In the hard sciences knowledge builds cumulatively. It propels the relentless growth in man’s ability to do more with less, which makes commodities such a lousy investment in the long term. Yet in the realm of social decision-making mankind is a fool, unable to learn the wisdom of posterity and doomed to repeat its mistakes: the first credit crunch occurred in the Rome of 33AD and the ancient Greeks lived with high inflation. Confidence in central bankers’ ability to learn from past inflation is as likely to be misplaced as it was in their ability to learn from past credit booms. Gold remains the cleanest insurance against such overconfidence." And confirming gold's very unique position in the investment pyramid, Grice's conclusion borders on the ontological: "Shorting mankind’s ingenuity isn’t a smart thing to do. But ingenuity isn’t wisdom. And shorting mankind’s ability to absorb wisdom … well, aren’t you silly if you don’t? With less of the technological risk you’re taking when you buy any other part of the commodities complex, gold is the oldest, purest and simplest way." It appears ever more are starting to agree with this perspective.

Buying Gold = Shorting Mankind's Wisdom: Analyst
Commodities are not a good investment over the long term because of man's ingenuity in discovering new ways to use existing resources or new technologies to replace depleting ones, according to Dylan Grice, a research analyst at Societe Generale.

Is that the same soc gen that had the "rogue trader" who caused the bernank to cut the ffr by 75 bps?

This is the horse and the hound and the hornThat belonged to the farmer sowing his cornThat kept the cock that crowed in the mornThat waked the priest all shaven and shornThat married the man all tattered and tornThat kissed the maiden all forlornThat milked the cow with the crumpled hornThat tossed the dog that worried the catThat killed the rat that ate the maltThat lay in the house that the Bernank built.

He was against it before he was for it.
Shorting mankind's "wisdom" is the essence of Jevon's paradox, is the essence of economic cycles, is the essence of free markets......

The Bears Are Back - Presenting Part 5 Of The Silver "Thesis"

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 03/25/2011 13:11 -0400

The bears are back, discussing the usual topics du jour, which in this case is a rather humorous listing of the most recent 99 black swans year to date in 2011, and their impact on silver. Funny stuff.

Note each cruise missile contains approx. 15kg of silver in wiring, contacts, solder and batteries.

Gold Daily and Silver Weekly Charts - Blythe Desperately Seeking Silver

http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspo...-charts_25.html

March 24, 2011-- "There is only one certainty regarding paper money -- the longer you hold it, the less it will buy in terms of real goods or real money -- gold." Richard Russell.
A late day raid on price, again after Europe went home for dinner. It happened at roughly the same time as it did yesterday, but it really did not do so much, and actually failed rather badly in silver.

Next week should be interesting.
